OUTTAKES FROM THE SCORE

From the beginning, it was understood that the music of Ashes To Ashes had to reflect the qualities of the film itself: dark, lush and more than a little offbeat.

On this page, we've made available some of composer Mark De Gli Antoni's musical cues that form the building blocks of the Ashes score.

  • Please note: most of these tracks underwent revisions before being incorporated into the final soundtrack. These excerpts are similar, but not identical, to the movie versions.

The Carters' Theme - groove
It's their movie, and the music here reflects their state of mind: confident and smooth. As well, their theme incorporates various funeral elements— organs, vibraphones, and minor chords— to underscore the things the Carters like best.

The Carters' Theme - intimate
In contrast to the "groove" theme, this one is reserved for scenes where the Carters are relaxing at home. As a result, "intimate" has a lighter feel, with resonant chimes and even a touch of harp.

Andrew Farkass' Theme
This dark and brooding theme foreshadows the late Andrew Farkass' unsettling presence. The instrumentation combines strings and reeds to create an exotic, otherworldly air.

Elaine Farkass' Theme
Distinctive in that it has no rhythmic structure, Elaine's theme is a simple layering of sounds which builds to a crescendo, echoing Elaine's increasingly agitated state of mind.

The Cops' Theme
The soundtrack becomes almost purely percussive at this point, serving to heighten the tension created by the arrival of the police. On some subconscious level, the theme suggests a nervous heartbeat.
